America’s Oldest Restaurant Food Challenge Since 1948

THINK YOU CAN HANDLE IT?

BACK IN 1948, OUR FOUNDERS ART AND DICK SAYLER had a simple idea: offer steaks by the ounce so folks could get exactly what they wanted. They never imagined their largest option—a whopping 72-ounce top sirloin—would become a legendary eating challenge that’s still stumping brave souls nearly 80 years later!

Here’s what’s in the challenge:

  • One massive 72-ounce top sirloin steak with onion rings on top
  • Two celery sticks and two carrot sticks
  • Two olives and two dill pickles
  • Your choice of regular salad or coleslaw
  • Ten french fries OR one baked potato
  • One slice of our fresh bread
  • Ice cream for dessert

The Rules Are Simple:

  • Finish everything in one hour
  • No leaving the table once you start
  • No help from friends (sorry!)
  • Must swallow every last bite

The Reward Is Sweet:

  • FREE meal (normally 90.00)
  • Commemorative t-shirt
  • Your name on our Wall of Fame forever
  • Bragging rights that’ll last a lifetime

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Since 1948, we’ve watched thousands of hungry challengers step up to the plate. Out of all those attempts, only 714 people have successfully conquered our beast of a meal as of late 2025. That’s roughly a 35% success rate—not impossible, but definitely not easy!

Most folks think it’s all about the steak, but here’s the secret: it’s everything else that gets you. Those vegetables, that potato, the bread—it all adds up fast. We’ve seen plenty of confident carnivores cruise through the meat only to get stumped by a few french fries!

Record Breakers & Hall of Fame
Our all-time champion is competitive eater Molly Schuyler, who absolutely demolished our challenge in just 2 minutes and 44 seconds back in 2014.

Watching her work was like nothing we’d ever seen—pure eating artistry! She made it look so easy that we almost felt bad charging other folks 90.00 to try.

But here’s the thing about our challenge: even professional competitive eaters sometimes walk away defeated. It’s not just about speed or stomach capacity—it’s about strategy, pacing, and little bit of that Portland fighting spirit.

You only get ONE shot at the free challenge in your lifetime, so make it count! Want to practice first? Order any size steak to get a feel for our portions and quality.

Before You Attempt:

  • Come hungry (obviously!)
  • Wear comfortable clothes
  • Bring your appetite and your camera
  • Maybe skip breakfast… and lunch

Pro Tips from Decades of Watching:

  • Pace yourself—this isn’t a sprint
  • Start with the steak while you’re freshest
  • Save some room strategy for the sides
  • Stay hydrated, but not too hydrated
